Overview of the ABB Tensiometer Millmate strip tension measurement system

The ABB Tensiometer Millmate Strip Tension Measurement System is characterised by high shock and overload resistance, fatigue resistance, long term stability, 

no moving parts and insensitivity to field electrical signal interference. Reduces mill downtime due to unpredictable faults and improves throughput.


The ABB Tensiometer Millmate strip tension measurement system is used to measure strip tension to ensure that the strip tension remains constant within the permissible 

range during acceleration and deceleration. The indenter is mounted on both ends of the guide roll. A complete system consists of:

The abb force-measuring indenter is based on ABB's patented magnetoelastic technology, the principle of piezomagnetism. The control unit supplies the head with 

magnetising power, processes the signals from the head and transmits the measured values to an external system. Communication with other systems can be via analogue 

outputs, high-speed field buses, etc. The PFEA111/PFEA112 control units can be set up and commissioned at the touch of a button. These functions are easy to realise thanks 

to the user-friendly interface. Measured values are displayed in the PFEA111/PFEA112 and communicated via analogue outputs to external displays or other peripheral devices. 

Status or alarm messages are displayed on the PFEA111/PFEA112 control unit or output via ProfisBus DP (only for PFEA112).

ABB Tensiometer Millmate Strip Tension Measurement - Pressure Head Measuring Principle

Piezomagnetic sensors work on the principle that the magnetic permeability of a magnetic material changes under mechanical force. The sensor is made from a single 

piece of stainless steel with four holes punched into the stainless steel body. Through these four holes are wound two sets of coils, which are at an angle to each other. 

When an alternating current is passed through the primary coils, a magnetic field is generated in the primary coils. Since the primary and secondary coils are at an angle 

to each other, no magnetic field is generated in the secondary coil as long as there is no load on the sensor. When a mechanical force is applied in the measurement 

direction of the sensor, the direction of propagation of the magnetic field in the primary coil changes, and the secondary coil is included in the magnetic field. As a 

result of the change in the magnetic field in the secondary coil, an induced potential is generated in this coil. The control unit converts this induced potential into a 

DC voltage signal proportional to the measured force counterpart.

Transverse pillow indenters are mainly used for measurements on treatment lines such as annealing, pickling and galvanising lines.

The transverse division is well suited for measuring strip tension. The indenter only measures the strip tension, not the roll weight. Measurements are taken with the highest possible accuracy.


The solid stainless steel design offers excellent sensitivity, accuracy and robustness as well as a high coefficient of elasticity.

ABB Tensiometer Millmate Strip Tension Measurement - Features of the Piezomagnetic Indenter

The indenter is machined from a single piece of stainless steel. It is only sensitive to forces in the direction of measurement. Forces in other directions are absorbed by 

the indenter due to its special structural design and thus have no effect on the force in the measuring direction.


Wide measuring range: Measuring range of 40:1, max. 200% of rated range, min. 5% of rated range.

Repeatable large overload capacity: 10 times the electrical overload capacity of the rated range and more than 30 times the mechanical overload capacity of the rated range, 

without plastic deformation and fatigue.

No calibration required

No physical drift

High power sensor output signal (100mV): large output signal and carrier frequency, excellent anti-interference performance.

Low impedance output (10 ohms): the indenter has better noise immunity and the output signal is insensitive to the insulation condition, making it more suitable for 

the harsh environment of rolling mills. The indenter is protected to IP65 for normal operation in sites with splash.

ABB Transducers - Pillow Type Indenter PFCL241-SE

Measuring range 200kN

The press head PFCL241-SE is ideal for multi-roll mills and other mill applications with high strip tension. It can also be used for high tension applications in processing lines.

This press head is a solid tensiometer made from a single piece of stainless steel and is extremely rugged with a high coefficient of elasticity similar to other Pressductor 

pillow blocks.


It can be mounted underneath the bearing housing to measure the vertical component force and can be used in both directions.The PFCL241-SE is suitable for use in 

rolling mill environments and is supplied with a sheathed fixed connection cable.
