GE Mark VIe is an integrated control system used in a wide variety of demanding and demanding applications, including gas and steam turbines, safety systems,
wind turbines, gasification, hydropower, nuclear and combined power plants. These diverse applications require a compact controller to provide the
performance and flexibility needed to reliably control devices.
Mark VIe controllers fall into the category of "result optimized" control devices in the new Internet-based control system (IICS). That said, in addition to
solving traditional engineering problems in process control, Mark VIe controllers also provide optimization and analysis algorithms that were not previously
possible through the built-in software and hardware of the field proxy Internet gateway. Powered by the Predix industrial cloud platform, these programmable
controllers provide reliable, secure communication and analytics for applications to optimize results based on edge-to-cloud distributed computing
Reliable high-speed operation of Mark VIe UCSC controllers is ensured through the use of a dedicated real-time operating system. These controllers are
designed to use simplex, duplex, or triple redundancy at incremental frame rates of up to 10 ms in any configuration. Because timing is important for high-performance turbine control applications, UCSC synchronizes the local processor clock on the I/O module.
The flexible design of the Mark VIe UCSC allows it to be used not only in turbine control applications, but also in DCS class applications, especially
steam and gas-fired power plants.
The controller has a wide range of communication capabilities (EGD, IONET, Modbus TCP, OPC-UA, PROFINET IO) while being small in size and
designed for harsh industrial conditions (-40 to 70 oC).
The Mark VIe runs on a dual-core 1.6GHz AMD processor with 128 GB of RAM, five Ethernet ports and two USB. Program and configure the
controller over Ethernet using the ControlST Software suite tool environment.
Flexible and powerful
The Mark VIe Distributed Control System (DCS) is a flexible platform for a variety of applications. It features high-speed network I/O for
simplex, duplex, and triple redundant systems. Industry-standard Ethernet communications are used for I/O, controllers, and monitoring
interfaces for operators and maintenance stations, as well as third-party systems. The generic ControlST* software suite is used with Mark VIe
controls and related systems for programming, configuration, trend analysis, and analytical diagnostics. It provides a single quality, time-consistent
data source at the controller and plant level to understand and adjust how the plant is operating in real time.
GE Mark VIe controls can be used in a wide range of applications. Its flexible architecture provides optimal solutions for wind, hydro, thermal
and nuclear facilities. Mark VIe DCS extends this flexibility from the traditional unit control provided by GE to a complete factory solution that
delivers advanced performance, operability and availability. As one of the world's largest equipment manufacturers, GE is responding to the challenges
of an aging infrastructure and workforce with scalable and reliable integrated control systems that offer greater flexibility, lower risk and lower costs.
Ethernet provides connectivity and flexibility
The Mark VIe distributed control system requires no backplane and is Ethernet-based to improve system design and simplify operation and
maintenance throughout the life cycle. Ethernet communication is the core of the industrial Internet foundation. The Mark VIe system leverages
this flexible, high-speed, low-cost communication to replace rack-based control at the lowest level of the control system architecture.
